Impressions of Japan Quilt Pattern

The complete pattern for our much-loved Impressions of Japan Block of the Month, now available separately in printed and digital formats.

Impressions of Japan is a beautiful and absorbing quilt project inspired by the colours, textiles and traditional imagery of Japan.

Across 27 individual panels, you’ll create a collection of miniature pictures featuring geisha, koi, cranes, cherry blossom, lanterns, bamboo and more, before bringing them together into a richly detailed finished wall hanging.

Originally designed as one of our most popular Block of the Month projects, Impressions of Japan combines a wonderful variety of techniques, including appliqué, embroidery, sashiko and folded patchwork. Each panel offers something different, making this a project to enjoy gradually and savour as it grows.

One of the distinctive features of the design is its unusual folded sashing. Prairie points, tucked triangles and a folded pinwheel add texture and dimension between the panels, while touches of metallic fabric and thread introduce flashes of gold and silver throughout the quilt.

Although the finished piece is wonderfully intricate, working through the smaller individual panels makes it a rewarding project to tackle one section at a time.
